Way to Go Online....(the facts) Part I

So what's happening with television?  More and more people are watching "television" online.  Why?  Well, you are no longer a slave to the schedule.  Freedom to watch whenever, wherever (at least wherever you have Wifi), however you want (on your laptop or on your friend's laptop).  So the hard facts, brought to you by Comscore, are that 11.5 billion videos were viewed in March 2008 up a whopping 64% from the previous year.  The average duration was 2.8 minutes.  YouTube led the way at 38% followed by MySpace at (drum roll please) 4.2%!  YouTube has cornered the market for user generated content.  With so many people watching video and most of them watching from YouTube, YouTube has become the place for video.  Or has it?
People have started calling these 2.8 minute average videos "YouTubes" - meaning quick crazy viral clips.  However, Hulu is coming at this fast with its professional portal type of methodology.  The break down of the numbers further shows that the average user watched 83 videos with 51 of them coming from "Google Sites."  Is Internet video different from TV?  Yes it is.  People expect a shorter experience.  2.8 minutes.  Even Hulu gives you an abbreviated experience with about 2 minutes of commercials for a 42 minute episodic.

Pretty soon everyone online will be watching video on their computers.  But what does that mean for the economics of it?
